Choosing the Right Thermostat for Installation in Your Home

Thermostat selection plays a big role in the function of your home’s HVAC systems. Homeowners have many options to choose from when selecting a thermostat—from traditional to programmable, smart thermostats and more. To begin the selection process, homeowners should identify what type of HVAC system they have. Based on mode of operation, two types of thermostats exist:

  1. Line voltage thermostats: used to regulate systems that use electricity to heat homes: baseboard heating, for example.
  2. Low voltage thermostats: used to regulate systems that rely on central furnaces, boilers, or heat pumps.

Once you’ve identified what type of heating system you have, and therefore what type of thermostat you need, select a thermostat with the functionality that will work best for your family.

Modern thermostats come in three major types:

  • Manual Thermostats

Manual thermostats are the most basic on the market. They are not programmable or Wi-Fi enabled. They are the least expensive type of thermostat and are a reliable choice for homeowners who wish to manually adjust the temperature of their home.

  • Programmable Thermostats

Programmable thermostats allow homeowners to pre-schedule adjustments in temperature throughout the day—for example, reducing the temperature at night when occupants are sleeping, or during the day when they’re at work. Programming is manual. The number of changes that can be programmed throughout the day or week depends on the make and model of the thermostat.

  • Smart Thermostats

Smart thermostats are the newest and most innovative type of thermostat available to homeowners. They’re called “smart” because they adapt to the needs of your home—adjusting the temperature when they sense activity or a lack thereof. Many models are Wi-Fi enabled and can be adjusted using a smartphone app. Some are even voice-control enabled.

Additional features available on modern thermostats include:

  • Indicator lights
  • Vacation mode
  • LED and touch screen controls
  • Night mode
